Thursday 6th March was an exciting day as we celebrated World Book Day and all things reading! This year we had a range of different activities in form time, lessons and three different competitions.
The day started with our World Book Day Quiz in form time—there were lots of rounds linked to a huge range of books, and the guess-the-book round proved to be very popular across all the year groups. We then headed off to lessons, where students had a short story shared with them at the start of every session. By the end of the day, all students had heard ‘Charles’ by Shirley Jackson. Share a Story was a great success for the third year running.
Year 7 also had a great opportunity to participate in the National Literacy Trust’s Great Footy and Booky quiz during their English and Maths lessons – they were able to join in with questions on both topics with special videos from many well-known footballers!
This year we had 3 competitions for students to take part in: Create a Character, Character Book Hunt and Which Book Am I? Create a Character was offered to all our Year 7 and 8 students and allowed them to choose their favourite book characters and create a representation of them in items they had at home. It was fantastic to see the steady stream of our students bringing a huge range of book characters created in many different ways, including clay, drawing and even cake. Miss Gregg has had a really tough time in choosing winners and they will be announced soon.
The character book hunt has been going on all week and students have been looking all over school for 20 famous characters from a wide range of books that are in classrooms and offices.
On World Book Day itself, 30 members of staff put on an extra lanyard, with a book cover in it and answered the question ‘which book are you?’ multiple times across the day. Students from all year groups have been working hard and getting their steps in to find all 30 – it has been great to see so many Year 11 students taking part. All winners will be announced next week once all entries have been handed in, checked and verified by our Year 7 Literacy Ambassadors.
