Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a fantastic opportunity offered to year 9 and year 10 students at Stanley High School. The DofE is about students and their friends sharing incredible experiences together, making memories, having fun and maybe help inspire you for the future too!

Taking part in the DofE Award will give you lots of different skills, develop your confidence and will help when you apply for college, university or a job. DofE allows you to talk about “soft skills” you have developed through taking part in extra-curricular activities e.g. teamwork, leadership, communication, teamwork, resilience, and commitment.

We offer Bronze to year 9 students and Silver to year 10 students.

A lot of people don’t realise how much time and commitment our students put into the Award so below is a summary of what the DofE Award involves:

BRONZE – 4 sections

It will usually take students at least 6 months to complete the Bronze programme.

  • Volunteering section: 3 months, 1 hour per week
  • Physical section: 3 months, 1 hour per week
  • Skills section: 3 months, 1 hour per week
  • Expeditions: Practice Expedition: 2 days/1 night; Qualifying Expedition: 2 days/1 night

You also have to spend an extra three months on one of the Volunteering, Physical or Skills sections.

It’s your choice which one and, though you can change your mind later, you should decide which section you want to do for longer at the beginning. Knowing how long you’re going to do it for will help you to choose your activity and set your goals for each section.

Expedition training sessions take place after school each Friday.

SILVER – 4 sections

It will take you at least 6 months for Silver if you’ve already achieved your Bronze, or 12 months if you’ve jumped straight into Silver.

  • Volunteering section: 6 months, 1 hour per week
  • Physical and skills section: one for 3 months and the other for 6 months, 1 hour per week
  • Expeditions: Practice Expedition: 3 days/2 nights; Qualifying Expedition: 3 days/2 nights

If you didn’t do Bronze, you must undertake a further 6 months in either the Volunteering or the longer of the Physical or Skills sections. We run the Silver programme through the YCP.

eDofE

Once you have completed the different components of the Award, you need to prove what activities you have done, show how you have made progress and how you have met the goals you set for each one.

eDofE is the online system that lets you record your activities and upload your evidence when you have completed your physical/skill and volunteering sections.
