Today, forty Year 8 students participated in two workshops celebrating the Chinese New Year, conducted by the Confucius Institute at Edge Hill University.
One session focused on the reasons behind the celebration of the Chinese New Year and explained why its timing differs from that of the UK New Year. Students enjoyed practising Mandarin Chinese holiday phrases and got creative by making paper lanterns, a traditional decoration used during the celebrations. They were thrilled to see the beautiful patterns created on the ceiling when a light was placed underneath the lanterns.
The highlight of the workshops was the opportunity to play traditional Chinese rhythm instruments and to engage in dragon dancing, using both small and large dragons. All the students participated enthusiastically in this activity, even though some were exhausted by the end!
The staff from Edge Hill praised the students for their good manners and enthusiasm, and we hope to strengthen our connection with the Confucius Institute in the future.
