It has been a pleasure to welcome our students back this week after the summer break and we look forward to another exciting year here at Stanley High. I would like welcome Miss Greenwood who has joined us as Teacher of Science and Mr Nelson who has also joined our Science department. There have been a number of improvements in and around the building over the holidays and a big thank you goes to our Premises Team and Support Staff.
I would like to congratulate staff and our former Year 11 students who achieved our best ever examination results in recent years. In the new GCSE’s in both Maths and English students performed above national expectations with 76% of students achieving 4+ in English with 73% achieving 4+ in Maths. Over 20% of students gained the top 9-7 grades in Maths. Across the curriculum there were many subjects in which students achieved excellent results, especially in Science with 71% of students gaining two GCSE’s at C or above. I look forward to celebrating their achievements at the Leavers’ Awards Evening in November and wish all our former students the best of luck as they start the next stages of their education.
School Dress Code
All students have been wearing their new Stanley High ties this week and they all look incredibly smart. During assemblies this week I have outlined to the students the high expectations we have as a community regarding uniform and thank you to parents/carers in supporting the school to maintain these high standards. The Student Dress Code can be found in the Student Planner.
It has been brought to our attention that some parents/carers purchased our new school tie from Whittakers, as they were unaware that the school was giving every student a free tie in September. Whittakers apologised for the confusion and have agreed to refund parents/carers who purchased ties from them the full £5.00, if the ties are returned directly to their Southport shop. The only stockist of the ties will be the school, and should you need a replacement tie in the future, they can be purchased from the School Finance Office for £5.00.
For September we have redesigned the student planners and introduced further learning resources and information for students and parents/carers. This is the first point of contact with home and I ask that they are signed weekly and that students use them as a learning tool and record their homework in the planners.
On Monday 18th September we will be holding our Open Evening for primary students and parents/carers to visit us as they make their decision on which High School to attend. The school will be open from 6pm to 8pm with a talk from myself taking place at 6.15pm in the Main Hall. If you have a Year 6/5 primary student, please feel free to visit us and take a tour around the classrooms where they will be able to experience what it will be like at our school and see what exciting topics they will have the chance to study should they choose to come to our school.
As many students will be helping on the evening and to enable time to prepare for the evening, school will finish at 2pm on Monday 18th September. Should your child wish to catch to school bus at 3pm, please let the school know and we will make appropriate arrangements.
Mr N Moore
Mrs McAlister would like to congratulate Sophie Marston in Year 11 who has produced some outstanding homework on her chosen topic of musical theatre. Emily Walsh in Year 10 has also produced work beyond expectation for her holiday homework on landscapes. Congratulations on your positive attitude to learning.
Mrs Ward has also been very pleased with her Art GCSE students and their lovely summer homework photographs and drawing booklets. The theme for the work was to produce photographs and a small sketchbook on the theme of ‘Summer’.
Well done to both Years 10 and 11 keep up the good work.
Drama club will start on Wednesday 20th September from 3-4pm in Room 33. This will be open to Year 7-10 every week and everyone is welcome.
A full programme of extra-curricular activities will be on the school website by the end of September.
We have a target of 95% attendance and work hard every day to beat this. The whole school attendance for week ending 8th September was 93.7%. Congratulations to 7MG, 7LW and 10JB for attaining 100% attendance this week and also to 7JF for 99.3%
