End of Term
On Tuesday 19th December we will close for the Christmas break at 12.15pm. Should your child require a free school meal, please let the school know and we will make appropriate arrangements.
The students will return on Thursday 4th January 2018 at 8.40am.
Churchtown Christmas Fair
Last Friday we attended the Fair in Churchtown with our Year 9 Enterprise Students and we raised a fantastic £200 selling their handmade ‘Magic Santa Keys’ and ‘Build your own Reindeers’. I was very proud of how the students engaged with the community and to see our budding entrepreneurs of the future.
The evening finished with 3 exceptional performances from our Year 7-10 dancers. A big thanks you to everybody who supported the students.
We welcomed Linaker and Kew Woods Primaries on Tuesday and Bishop David Sheppard and St Johns Crossens Primaries on Thursday of this week, who enjoyed fantastic taster days here at Stanley High. Our students were excellent ambassadors and helped support the primary students throughout the day.
In the event of adverse weather parents/carers will be informed by Groupcall. Please also check the school website and local radio stations.

Year 11 Mock Examinations
Year 11 Mock exams continue into next week for the final 3 exams, please see below the timetable, which is also available on the school website.
Christmas Jumper Day – Friday 15th December 2017
On Friday 15th December we will hold another Christmas Jumper Day, students will be allowed to wear a festive jumper in exchange for a donation to charity, we suggest a minimum of a £1 donation but all donations will be appreciated. All monies raised will be split between the Save the Children charity and the charity supported by our in school Interact Rotary Club.
Charity Christmas Fair
On Friday 15th December from 2-6pm we will be holding a Charity Christmas Fair. This is part of an enterprise project by our Year 9 students which will include a number of stalls selling various items ranging from personalised Christmas decorations to Reindeer models and Magic Santa keys. Hot chocolate and cookies and winter warmer soup will also be available to keep you warm. We will also have a tombola stall and if you are able to send in a raffle prize it will be greatly appreciated.
We have some fantastic entertainment taking place, including some of our local primary school students who will be coming to sing some festive songs as well as our amazing dancers, musicians and singers as well as some of Mr Hooton’s jugglers and possibly even a visit from a very special person! We look forward to seeing as many of you
there as possible.
The following charities will benefit from the money that will be raised: Claire House Children’s Hospice, Make a Wish Foundation, Cancer Research, The Ben Gautrey Foundation and Rotarian Foundation.
The canteen will be serving a traditional Christmas Roast Dinner and Pudding on Wednesday 13th December for a cost of £2.20.
Year 7 Christmas Community Action
Year 7 will be supporting the Southport Foodbank for their Community Action this term. Each form has been allocated four items from the Christmas meal list supplied by the
Foodbank and we are asking for each student to bring in one item from their list if possible, this is obviously on a donation basis. Students have been invited by the
Foodbank at Lakeside, Southport to visit on Tuesday 12th December to see for themselves how our donations are used. Thank you in advance for your continuing support.
More Able visit
Ten of our Year 10 students took part in a more able student visit to Runshaw College
last week. During the visit they took part in a number of activities which included:
Creating their own Mocktails, making their own Irish Cream or Rum Truffles, decorating
biscuits, Silver Service, Flambéing pancakes and event planning, along with a
demonstration of tempura and making designer burgers.
The College staff commented that not only was our student’s behaviour exemplary, but that they were one of the politest groups of students that had ever visited the college.
Mrs Bowers took four of our More Able Art students to Runshaw College for a ‘Drawing using different media’ master class this week. The students thoroughly enjoyed the new techniques they used in the lessons that were taught by the College tutors.
Their work came out quite impressive and is currently displayed on the Art corridor, if students wish to be inspired.
This week Olivia in Year 7 has been awarded the creative work of the week for her Art homework. Olivia has been working on this piece of homework for a number of weeks and the project was to produce a piece of Artwork related to the theme of sweets.
A local sweet company are offering a prize for the best piece of artwork. The deadline is Christmas and the managing director will be judging them over the Christmas break and the prize will be awarded in January. Olivia has worked really hard on her entry; well done Olivia and good luck with the competition.
Final rehearsals are currently taking place for this year’s Winter Showcase which will be taking place on Monday 18th December at 1.15pm. This year we have over 100 students performing a variety of musical, dance and drama routines to entertain members of the local community and family members.
If you have been sent an invite then please return your slip to the school office by Monday 11th December stating how many seats you would like reserving. We are also looking forward to welcoming our local primary schools next Wednesday 13th December to watch the show.
Congratulations to our Year 7 and 8 students who have been busy putting their creative writing skills to the test. Students were asked to write their own poem with the title ‘Life @ stanleyhigh.co.uk’ to capture the image of school life and their feelings about our school. Mr Moore had the difficult task of selecting the overall winner and huge congratulations go to Jemma (1st Prize) Emily (2nd) and Holly (3rd) – well done girls.
Each fortnight during form time there will a specific spelling and grammar focus for the students. This information is also available online for parents/carers and students should they wish to work on it at home. Please follow the link below to see the fortnightly focus for this half term.
The KS4 Girls Badminton team were involved in the Centre Parcs Badminton Competition which was hosted at Stanley High School this week. The event always provides a high class field and the badminton on show was top class. The girls performed fantastically finishing 3rd and 4th in a highly competitive competition.
Year 9 students took part in the recent Southport and Formby Basketball Competition at Birkdale High School. They started strong, winning both fixtures against Formby and Range in closely fought games. They eventually lost their last game to a strong Birkdale team which meant they finished 2nd in this competition but showed promising signs for the basketball season ahead.
A special well done to the Year 7 football team who have excelled again in this year’s ESFA National Cup. After a hard fought 7-4 victory against Bury Grammar School, they are looking to follow in the footsteps of Year 10 and reach a National Cup Final. They must play another four games with the first game against Oldham Grammar next week. Well done to all the students who have represented Year 7 in both the girls and boys football teams.
Girls Football – Our girls went off to Netherton last week with high expectations after their victory at this tournament 2 weeks ago. Although the girls got off to a good start with positive results against Christ the King and Savio High they eventually lost their final group game against a strong Range High team 1-0. This meant that the girls finished a very credible 3rd place, a very strong start to the season. Well done to all the girls who have participated this year.
This week we had Kew Woods, Linaker, St Johns Crossens, Bishop David Sheppard and Presfield schools attending Stanley. They have all taken part in a number of different subjects and there have been a number of Year 9 and 10 Sports Leaders who have assisted.
