Headteacher’s update

Fidget Spinners
As you may be aware, the latest craze for youngsters is fidget spinners and cubes that are widely available.  Please can you outline to your child that these are not permitted in school unless agreed by our Special Educational Needs Department as support for an identified learning need.  They are often a distraction for other students and teachers that can hinder concentration and learning.

Whole School Photograph
On Wednesday we had the whole school photograph taken and I would like to congratulate the students (and staff!) for their exceptional behaviour and following the instructions given by the staff from Tempest. We will let you know when the photograph is available for viewing and purchase.

Sainsburys Activekids
Please remember to send your vouchers into school, we can continue to collect them until the end of June.
The vouchers will enable us get some free equipment for the school, which will benefit our students in either the PE or the Catering department.

11 GCSE Art Students attended a taster workshop at Southport College Art Department on Friday 28th April with Mrs McAlister. They experienced how it would be to work as a fashion designer in a fast paced industry and also as a graphic designer.

The students enjoyed the experience and were a credit to the school being described as the” best taster group they had ever had” they will now use the work produced and the skills they learnt as part of their GCSE coursework.

A big thank you to Mrs Bowers who also accompanied them and Mr Venables for driving the minibus!

Well Done Molly!
Molly in Year 7 has made these two characters out of elastic loom bands over the weekend.
The detail and time and effort she has put into them has paid off as they are amazing! Well done Molly.

Year 11 Fine Art Exhibition
There will be an Art Exhibition of the Year 11 Fine Art students work in the foyer tonight and next week. Parent/Carers have been invited to a private viewing from 4-6pm with refreshments available. The students have spent months on preparatory work leading up to a 10 hour final piece. The themes students were able to choose from were Details, Out of place, Wrap, Walking, Assembled, Music in Art and Architecture. This is a fantastic opportunity to display the GCSE work for other students to see and also to enable parent/carers to view their child’s work and hopefully we will continue this idea in years to come.

Students in Years 7-10 had an assembly this morning on our STANLEY’S GOT TALENT show. Auditions will take place next Friday 12th May at 3.10pm in the main hall and all students are welcome with any act that shows off their talent. The show will take place on Thursday 13th July at 7pm and tickets will be on sale from 5th June at a cost of £3.00 from the finance office. The show promises to be a fantastic evening – there are even rumours that the staff may be getting in on the act and showing off their talent too!

For further information students can see Miss Cassidy and Mr Winstanley.

On Thursday 27th April, 7 set 1 and 8 set 1 Maths students took part in the UK Junior Maths Challenge.  This is a national event organised by Leeds University which involves students taking a one hour test on challenging Maths questions.  The papers are marked externally and we eagerly await the results which are due in about six weeks’ time.
Well done to all who took part and good luck!

Sports News
The new extra-curricular activities have commenced with Athletics, Cricket and Rounders which are really well attended. Fixtures for these competitions have been arranged with Sefton schools and also Lancashire schools in the boys Cricket competitions.

3 Year 10 students completed their practical GCSE dance moderation last week. They performed exceptionally well and hopefully their results will reward the hard work and dedication they have shown for the last 4 years.  Well done girls.

Wally Cain rehearsals are continuing on Wednesdays after school.  The dance is really coming together and is looking fantastic.  There will be a practice during the May half term week, students will be informed of the date next week.

Year 10 Rugby team played against two Widnes schools last night, Wade Deacon High and Saints Peter and Paul College.   Our first match was against Saints Peter and Paul and having seen them at previous tournaments we knew this was going to a difficult game.  We were quickly under pressure and conceded several tries before finding our stride and scoring ourselves.   Despite losing this game by 5 tries to 1 there were many encouraging signs particularly our running with the ball and an improving commitment in the tackle.

The 2nd game was against the host school Wade Deacon and despite both schools being from a Rugby League area their Union skills were useful too.  Again we conceded some early tries before coming back strongly in the second half to finish 5 – 3 down in tries.  An afternoon playing rugby in the warm sun was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone with the team looking forward to the next tournament with increased enthusiasm and determination.

Upcoming Fixtures
9th May – Year 7 Boys Athletics Competition at Birkdale High
10th May – Year 8 Cricket Lancashire Cup v Cowley
11th May – Year 9 Merseyside schools Rugby union
12th May – Year 7/8 Girls Liverpool Schools Football Competition at Litherland High

We have a target of 95% attendance and work hard every day to beat this. The whole school attendance for week ending 28th April 2017 was 95.2%.

Congratulations to 7WIL for achieving 100% attendance this week and 7CRL and 9THO for achieving 99.3% attendance.
