Manners Matter week

This week has seen the first of our ‘Praise weeks’ which will take place at least once per half term. Each of the chosen weeks will have a different topic where staff can nominate a student who they feel has gone above normal practice in the chosen topic.

This week we have focused on manners, and staff have been nominating students who they felt have been outstanding. All students who were nominated will be recognised for their politeness and two students will be randomly chosen to receive a voucher worth £10.

We encourage all students at all times to be polite and we know that on the whole our students already are, but this is a way to promote good manners and encourage students to be polite at all times. I have been delighted to see so many students ‘posting’ their nomination cards in the post box outside my office and I hope you join us in celebrating if your child has been nominated, or is indeed one of the two winners.

‘Wacky Hair Day’

Our school is part of the Southport Learning Partnership where we work together with other schools on joint projects. On Friday 9th February 2018 we will be taking part in a Southport wide event called Love My Community where we hope every child in the town will wear ‘wacky hair’ for the day in exchange for a £1 donation towards the local Alzheimer’s Society. The idea for this event came from a student on the joint School Council and we all thought it was fantastic!

The Alzheimer’s Society provide a vital service for many families in our community and we thought this would be a great gesture of support for the work that they do. We hope that you will have some great hair ideas and help a vital local charity. Many thanks for your help with this appeal and we hope together we can all make a huge demonstration that we Love our Community!

Year 8 Options Assemblies

Next week we continue with the start of the Option process for Year 8 students. Subject teachers will give a short presentation to students to give advice and guidance as to what will be expected should they choose the subject as an Option; this will help students when they are choosing their Options. There will also be an Options Evening where students and parents/carers are invited into school to visit the departments where further information and guidance will be available. This will take place on Wednesday 7th February, further details will be provided nearer the time.

More Able Runshaw Visit

On Tuesday five Year 10 students visited Runshaw College to take part in an RE and Philosophy morning. Students looked at whether the existence of God can be proved and the validity of the various arguments which try to prove the existence of a deity.

In the Philosophy section, students looked at the big question of free will: do we have it or do we just think that we do? The students enjoyed the challenge and came back with sore brains!

Art

Mrs Ward’s Creative work of the week is awarded to Ella Halton in Year 11 for her beautiful frog paintings. These are Ella’s final pieces for her Colours in Nature coursework project.

Ella also designed and made the wooden frames to fit the shape of her paintings, thank you Mr Pinder for helping with these frames. Ella then decided to extend her paintings onto the frame. What lovely pieces Ella, well done.

Drama

This week in Miss Cassidy’s Drama club the students organised the session by leading the group in Drama warm up and team building games. Drama club were also invited to the upcoming theatre trip to The Liverpool Empire to see Wicked in March and I’m pleased to see that many are joining us. Drama club is open to any student – please feel free to come along and try it out. Next week we are creating costume characters!

PE

Our Year 10 Sports Leaders have been busy this week as they have been involved in running the Primary Futsal Competitions which have taken part every night, the final will take place at Stanley next week. The students have shown a great attitude at all fixtures and this has been noted by teachers, parents and the EFC coaches who have been to watch.

Year 11 Handball

Nine of our Year 11 GCSE boys took part in a recent North Sefton Schools Handball tournament at Formby High. They competed with great skill and enthusiasm in a new sport that has been developed this year at Stanley High. What has been really pleasing about this group of boys is that an extra-curricular team has been created and an increasing number of our students will be able to use handball as one of their practical activities in the forthcoming GCSE practical moderation.
