Headteacher’s update
Jon Mayhew Visit
As part of our World Book day celebrations, we are having another visit from Jon Mayhew, our writer in residence. He will be coming in on Wednesday 1st March and more of our students will have the opportunity to meet Jon and find out about the process of being an author. Even more excitingly, we have also invited students from our feeder primaries to come and work with Jon and we look forward to welcoming them.  All students will have the opportunity to purchase Jon’s books, should they wish to do so, each book costs £5 (payable on the day) and Jon will sign them personally.

Parents Evening
Thank you to all parents who attended the Year 8 parents evening last night, despite the best efforts of storm Doris it was a great turn out. I was delighted I had the opportunity to talk with lots of our parents and feedback through the parental questionnaires was very encouraging and positive.

Year 9 Parents Evening is on Thursday 9th March from 4-7pm and the online booking system is now open.  Please follow the link to book your appointments https://stanleyhighschool.parentseveningsystem.co.uk/.

Road Safety
I have been in discussion with Sefton regarding the safety of our students travelling to and from school and the traffic calming measures on Fleetwood Road. Please can you encourage your child to show good road sense and for clarification, the kerb to kerb speed table near to the schools entrance is a non-formalised crossing, therefore students should cross when clear and vehicles should slow on the approach.  Please can parents avoid stopping on the raised speed bumps/table when dropping off students.

If you child comes to school on a bike please share the following resources with them on bike safety. http://think.direct.gov.uk/cycling.html

Year 10 Career Seminars
Year 10 students have been lucky enough to have a number of career seminars with parents, with more still to come. This week we had an ex-student in school who is now a solicitor for Sefton Council.  He gave a talk on how to get in to the legal profession to sets 1 and 2 students. The talk was very successful and the budding solicitors found it very useful!

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage any member of our school community to get in touch with Miss Perkins if you are able to come into school and allow our students to benefit from your experiences. Please contact the school office if you feel that you may be able to offer the students a valuable insight into your ‘world of work’.

Austrian Ski Visit
On Thursday 2nd March at 6pm in the school hall a parents/students information evening for the Austrian Ski Trip will take place, where the final details of our visit will be provided, together with the opportunity to answer any questions.

Merit Badges
Mrs Lee was exceptionally pleased to give 73 Year 8 students bronze badges during their assembly this week.  Bronze badges are awarded to students who have achieved more than 100 merit points.  We now have over 80 Year 8 students wearing them which is a fantastic achievement and an inspiration for others to achieve their own Bronze, Silver or Gold Badge.

Mrs Ward has chosen the numerous students who have entered the ‘Design a Mascot’ competition which is being run by Sefton Council as her creative work of the week.

Students were asked to design a mascot that can be used on the Sefton website, on social media, and in a video to celebrate the year of the coast. The prizes include family passes to the Southport Air Show and Southport Musical Fireworks Championships.

Year 11 Walk and Talk Mocks
During their English lessons this week, Year 11 have been completing walk and talk mocks in the hall. This is to help them develop their skills in answering the questions on the two English language examinations.

Miss Perkins has delivered all the sessions, showing the students how to decode the requirements of each question and explaining how to produce the most effective answer. Hopefully, students have found this useful and will be able to apply their knowledge and understanding in their mock examinations next week!

Reading Club
Year 7 and 8 reading club is open every Thursday lunchtime in Room 7 with refreshments available and for each attendance students will be rewarded with a merit point.
