Four of our year 9 English as an Additional Language students are entering a ‘Mother Tongue’ competition which is officially endorsed by Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace prize winner and education activist. It is led by the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy and also endorsed by the British boxer Amir Khan. They must produce a poem, song or lullaby in their home language. This is then illustrated and attached to an accompanying letter which must be written in English; explaining why they have chosen it and how it inspires them.
This is quite a challenge for the students, as all four only joined Stanley High School in September 2015 having just arrived in England. It must be produced independently; therefore allowing them to demonstrate their English understanding and writing ability in such a short time.
The students are delighted to be taking part in this regional competition and have worked really hard to achieve their personal best in all aspects.
“I am really proud to be supporting such hard working students, they have produced some outstanding work.”
