Headteacher’s update

Remembrance Service

I had the pleasure of attending a service today at St Cuthbert’s Church, I was accompanied by Miss Van Eker and Lilly and Naomi who were the overall winners of the competition held to commemorate 100 years since the end of the Great War, details below.

It was a lovely service and we were very proud to represent Stanley High School alongside all the other local High Schools and Primary Schools.

I am also very proud of the conduct of all the students who observed the minutes silence today whilst in school.

School Games Mark

School Games Gold AwardFor the second year running I am pleased to announce we have achieved the Gold School Games Mark. The Gold Mark is awarded to schools who offer a wide variety of Physical Education and Sport within the curriculum and extra-curricular provision.

At Stanley we ensure that all students within the school have the opportunity to access a wide range of extra-curricular clubs and we ensure that our curriculum is varied to suit the needs of all students. Year 8, 9 and 10 students can access the leadership programme and opportunities available to them, which supports not only Stanley High but also the local primary schools who visit Stanley High regularly. Stanley also regularly enters A, B and C teams into local competitions to ensure all students who wish to represent the school have the opportunity to do so.

Enrichment Day

Next week we will hold out second enrichment day for all years. Year 7 and 8 will be working with Science on Sustainable Goals, Year 9 will be working on an Enterprise project which will culminate in the overall winners producing and selling their projects for charity at the Christmas Fayre, Year 10 will be studying PSHE and Year 11 will be continuing with their college applications and looking at Mental Health issues.

Year 11 Leavers Celebration Evening

We will be holding our Year 11 Leavers Celebration Evening on 20th November at 7pm in the school hall. This is a wonderful evening where students will receive their GCSE certificates and have the opportunity to re-visit the school. Letters have gone out this week inviting students to attend and we are looking forward to seeing as many students as possible attend on the evening.

Christmas Fayre

As we did last year, we will be holding a Christmas Fayre on Wednesday 12th December from 2pm to 6pm. There will be multiple stalls and entertainment and Year 9 students will be raising money for charity through the enterprise project as they did last year. The students will be deciding what their project will be and which charity they wish to raise money for on Tuesday 13th November during Enrichment day.

Word of the week

As you may know, we have a word of the week that we are encouraging students to use and this is being displayed in classrooms and around school. The word for this week was ‘sequacious’ and we hope that students had plenty of opportunities to use this. The word for week commencing 12th November will be ‘malice’.

Maths and English Challenge

The winners of the Maths Challenge last fortnight were Hollie Taylor (Year 7) and Ben Porter (Year 8) and the winners of the English Challenge were Hollie Taylor (Year 7) and Lilly Barnes (Year 8). Well done to them.

The next challenge can be found on the link below, students have until next Thursday lunch time to enter. Answers for last fortnight’s challenge can be found at the link below.

Mrs Ward’s Creative work of the week is awarded to Caitlin Aird for her Art Homework board based around the theme birds. Caitlin has included a beautiful poem based on birds; she has also researched an artist’s style of work and produced a painting in the style of this work.

This piece of homework will help inspire her final piece of work.

Well done Caitlin.

Last week, students had the opportunity to enter a competition, based on a creative piece of work being produced, in memory of all those who lost their lives during WWI, to commemorate 100 years since the end of the Great War.

We had some thoughtful entries, however, the winning entry was a piece made by Lilly and Naomi from Year 7.

Please be aware, our school will also be laying a wreath on Remembrance Sunday, at the main cenotaph, on Lord Street, at 11.00am this Sunday. If you wish to come along to see this, please be aware it does get busy so arrive in good time.

Stanley High took an A and B team to the North Sefton Basketball competition at Birkdale High on Tuesday. The tournament also comprised of Meols Cop, Christ the King and Birkdale and we provided some outstanding individual and team performances in winning the competition. Special mention does have to go to our A team who had 3 comprehensive victories including a 26–4 victory against Christ the King, 28-2 victory against Meols Cop before winning the final against Birkdale 16-4. Well done to all the students who took part and later on this half term there will be a Sefton Championship held at Edge Hill University.

Year 8 and 10 played fixtures against Holy Family last week. Although Year 10 struggled against a strong Holy Family team it was nice that some of the students were representing the school for the first time and their attitude throughout the game was excellent. The Year 8 team were involved in a thrilling 4-3 victory against the team that beat them last year and this victory was even more impressive. Year 8 have a National Cup Fixture against Maghull High before the 15th November.

GCSE Handball

For the past year Stanley High have developed handball in the curriculum and extra-curricular timetable, which has been recognised both regionally and nationally. Working alongside Birkdale High, Meols Cop and Christ the King the number of students using Handball as a practical sport for GCSE has increased dramatically. The girls will be having their moderation next week and later on this half term there will two boys competitions at Stanley High followed by further competitions held after Christmas at Formby High.

Club A reminder that on Tuesdays from 4–5pm the PE department will be running a Trampolining club for all year groups. This is a great opportunity for students to practice new skills on our Olympic size trampolines. For further information please encourage students to see a member of PE.
