It has been a pleasure to welcome our students back this week after the summer break and we look forward to another exciting year here at Stanley High. I would like to welcome Miss Hamer who has joined us as a Teacher of Science and Mrs McMahon and Mr Williams who have also joined us as Teachers of English. There have been a number of improvements in and around the building over the holidays and a big thank you goes to our Premises Team and Support Staff.
GCSE Examination Results
Congratulations to all our students who received their GCSE results this summer. I am very proud of all our Year 11 students who have worked hard to achieve their results, helped by hard-working staff and supportive families.
We are especially pleased with the number of students achieving the new higher grades of 9-7 across the school, particularly within areas of the core curriculum. The increased rigour of GCSE examinations and the introduction of numerical grading have meant this cohort of students has been faced with significant challenges, however they have excelled across the curriculum. I wish all of the students every happiness and success. I look forward to celebrating their achievements at the Leavers’ Awards Evening in November and wish all our former students the best of luck as they start the next stages of their education.
Calendar of Events
Included with this bulletin you will find a separate document detailing the calendared dates for the whole school year, this information is always subject to change and you will be notified when any additional details are added. You can also find details of the school year on the website calendar.
On Monday 17th September, we will be holding our Open Evening for primary students and parents/carers to visit us as they make their decision on which High School to attend. The school will be open from 6pm to 8pm with a talk from myself taking place at 6.15pm in the Main Hall. If you have a Year 6/5 primary student, please feel free to visit us and take a tour around the classrooms where they will be able to experience what it will be like at our school and see what exciting topics they will have the chance to study should they choose to come to our school.
As many students will be helping on the evening and to enable time to prepare for the evening, school will finish at 2pm. Should your child wish to catch to school bus at 3pm please let the school know and we will make appropriate arrangements.

Macmillan Coffee Morning
We will be holding our annual Macmillan coffee morning on Friday 28th September and we hope that the fantastic efforts that both students and staff gave last year will be bettered this year in our bid to raise money for what is a very worthwhile cause.
We invite parent/carers and grandparents to join us for refreshments from 10am to 12noon and we welcome all donations of cake, be it homemade or shop bought, and will be providing refreshments for you to purchase to raise funds for this fantastic charity. We look forward to seeing you there.
Year 7 will have the opportunity to complete their level 3 Bikeability course, which is the Cycling Proficiency for the 21st century. The course is designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads. We will teach children to ride a bike to National Standards and introduce them to cycling as a fun and everyday activity, and as an alternative, low cost mode of transport.
Level 3 training enables children to ride on busy roads more safely and opens up their options for travel. Year 7 students will be given a letter today (Friday 7th September) and will need to return the reply slip and complete the parental consent form to the school office should they wish to take part by Wednesday 12th September. The sessions will run on Monday 24th September and Monday 1st October.
Year 7 and 8 Football Tour
We are looking into the possibility of running a football tour for Year 7 and 8 students to Holland. The tour will look to commence on Friday 5th April for 5 nights returning on Tuesday 9th April. Included in the tour will be coaching sessions and competitive matches against local teams at PSV Eindhoven training ground and the possibility of watching a Dutch Premier league game.
A representative from Inspire Sports will be delivering a short presentation on Tuesday 11th September at 6pm in the school hall. If your child is interested in accessing this fantastic opportunity, please attend this presentation or contact Mr Walsh for further information.
Mrs Ward’s creative work of the week goes to Abbey Tomlinson in Year 11 for her amazing summer holiday homework.
The brief for the homework project was to create a 3D insect using found materials. Abbey has certainly been very creative with her use of materials to create her insect. Well done Abbey.
Lauren Taberner in Year 10 has produced four beautifully framed canvases to plan her final piece of coursework on the theme of landscapes. I am so impressed at the amount of time Lauren has obviously spent on this work and she also took a series of amazing photographs.
I was also astounded by the level of commitment and hard work displayed by Emily Walsh, Leila Storch and Chloe Winder – well done girls, Mrs McAlister is incredibly proud of you.
Over the summer holidays, Year 10 Spanish students were asked to revise, before embarking on their final year at Stanley. One student in particular managed to complete an incredible amount of detailed revision, including learning vocabulary, grammar exercises, translation tasks and developing more complex structures. Well done Ruby Davies; this shows independence, a real dedication to the subject and I am sure that you will continue to do very well in Spanish.
