Reminder that there will be a bank holiday on Monday 6th May and May half term will take place from Monday 27th to Friday 31st May.
This is an important time for our Year 11 students who now only have two weeks left to prepare for the start of their GCSE Examinations. Study sessions will continue before and after school and during lessons, should they feel they have any concerns please encourage them to speak with their teacher. We will also be holding extra revision during the May half term; details will follow nearer the time.
I wish all of Year 11 the best of luck for their forthcoming exams and should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Form Tutor or the Year 11 Leader, Mrs Rae.
British Sign Language
We are very excited to be introducing (BSL) British Sign Language in our school.
Our introductory course will be running on a Monday afternoon 3pm-4pm within the English Department.
If any students are interested in joining this group then can they please see Mrs Abram (Room 9) for more information.
Mr N Moore
On Wednesday, we had our fourth Enrichment Day of the year, with the students being given a variety of sessions.
Year 7 were based in the Science Department and created a Science revision game on a topic that they have studied this year. This allowed them to focus on some aspects of their 16 by 16 Stanley Journey Experiences Booklet. They worked really well in their groups, and showed great communication skills.
Year 8 were based in Art and Technology, developing a number of skills, including creative work in art; designing puzzles, then building their products, and also making bread.
Year 9 visited The University of Liverpool to gain information about university life, and received some bespoke lectures about Science, and they also had a question and answer session with current university students.
The Year 10 students were involved in a day led predominantly by Career Connect, to allow them to focus on work related learning, college applications and skills required in the workplace.
Year 11 received revisions sessions from RE, History, English, and the Geography students experienced a field trip to prepare them for their upcoming examinations.
UK Maths Challenge
On Tuesday we took part in the UK Maths Challenge. This is something we do every year; the students were impeccably behaved so hopefully this will bode well in the results.

In February 5 Year 10 students from the more able cohort for Art had the opportunity to draw on location in Wayfarers Arcade. This was to plan and prepare work for a public exhibition to celebrate the 120th birthday of the iconic building. Mr Thorpe took the students to the award presentation last Thursday and all students were awarded with a certificate. Scott Ogden also won a prize for his ink drawing of the Arcade.
The Art department had a great enrichment day this week. We were very lucky to be working with a very talented year group. Students worked with acrylics to produce small paintings of cupcakes and worked on their pattern work to produce packaging for these paintings. Thanks for working really hard Year 8, Mrs McAlister and Mrs Ward were very impressed.
Since the Easter break our Sports Leaders in Years 8 and 9 have been running football tournaments for 16 of our local primaries. As ever the students have done an excellent job and the feedback we get from parents and teachers is always fantastic. The students have run tournaments for Year 6 and Year 2 students and next week our students will be running tournaments for Year 4 students. Well done to all the leaders who have helped out and as always being fantastic ambassadors for Stanley High.
I am pleased to announce we will be continuing our partnership with Fleetwood Hesketh over the next few months.
During this time our students will be able to use the cricket nets on a Wednesday with Mr Walsh and receive top level coaching from the professional player at the club and Greg Pennington who works for Lancashire Cricket. We will also be able to play our school games at Fleetwood Hesketh, which is a wonderful venue to play cricket.
If any student is interested in playing cricket, please note that cricket is on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays and to speak with Mr Walsh. This year the cricket teams will be involved in games against our local schools and the Lancashire Cup, in which we have reached the final on three successive occasions.
Athletics practice has started with good attendance already from Year 7 and 8 students. Athletics practice is always on a Monday and we have the Southport and Waterloo mile races before the end of the month, plus the North Sefton and Sefton Championships before the end of term. If you are interested in competing or simply trying to improve your personal best in any of the jumps, throws or runs then come along and have a go!
There has also been good attendance for Rounders and games will be commencing this half term with the culmination of the North Sefton schools tournament at Stanley later this half term. Our students have traditionally performed well in this activity and the attendance at extra-curricular means that there are positive signs for the future.
Girl’s basketball will be starting in the next few weeks for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 students with the North Sefton Championship to be held at the end of this month. If you are interested in participating then see a member of the PE department and they will guide you to the correct evening to attend the training.

Word of the week
As you may know, we have a word of the week that we encourage students to use during their day to day learning and each week the word will be displayed in classrooms and around school. The word for this week was ‘foreshadow’ and we hope that students had plenty of opportunities to use this.
The word for week commencing 7th May will be ‘resilient’ adjective; durable, hard-wearing, stout, strong, sturdy, tough.
We have a target of 95% attendance and work hard every day to beat this. The whole school attendance for week ending 26th April 2019 was 94.7%.
Congratulations to 7RP and 8KVE who both achieved 99.5% attendance.
