Headteacher’s update

Firework and Bonfire Safety

Your child was given information this week relating to firework safety issued by the local police. We have also sent some information to parents and carers via groupcall. Please ensure your child is aware of the guidance for their own safety and remind them that the police will be extra vigilant at this time of year.

Please follow the link to see the guidance

Remembrance Sunday

We continue to sell poppies within school, please encourage your child to donate and to wear a poppy as a remembrance to the fallen and injured, particularly with this year being the celebration of

100 years since the First World War.

Students continue to visit form rooms during morning registration to allow students to donate to this very important cause. Next week the assemblies will focus on this very important topic and we hope that students have a better appreciation of what remembrance Sunday is about and why we acknowledge this day, particularly with this being the 100-year anniversary of the First World War.

There will be a one-minute silence held in school on Friday 9th November.

Year 7 Parents Evening

The Year 7 parents evening will take place on Thursday 15th November from 4pm to 7pm. Parents and carers are able to book their appointments online via the link below. Should you need further information or assistance with this, please call the office on 228940. https://stanleyhigh.co.uk/student-progress-evenings/

Year 11 Leavers Celebration Evening

We will be holding our Year 11 Leavers Celebration Evening on 20th November at 7pm in the school hall. This a wonderful evening where students will receive their GCSE certificates and have the opportunity to re-visit the school. Letters have gone out this week inviting students to attend and we are looking forward to seeing as many students as possible attend on the evening.

Mr N Moore

Christmas Fayre

As we did last year, we will be holding a Christmas Fayre on Wednesday 12th December from 2pm to 6pm. There will be multiple stalls and entertainment and Year 9 students will be raising money for charity through the enterprise project as they did last year. The students will be deciding what their project will be and which charity they wish to raise money for on Tuesday 13th November during Enrichment day.

France Ski Visit – April 2019

On Thursday 1st November 2018 at 6pm, we held an information meeting in the school hall to provide students and parents going on the Ski trip next April. If you were unable to attend, please contact Mr Lock for information.

Word of the week

As you may know, we have a word of the week that we are encouraging students to use and this is being displayed in classrooms and around school. The word for this week was ‘segregation’ and we hope that students had plenty of opportunities to use this. The word for week commencing 5th November will be ‘sequacious ’.

Maths and English Challenge

The winners of the Maths Challenge last fortnight were Hollie Taylor (Year 7) and Ben Porter (Year 8) and the winners of the English Challenge were Hollie Taylor (Year 7) and Lilly Barnes (Year 8). Well done to them.

The next challenge can be found on the link below, students have until next Thursday lunch time to enter.

Mrs Ward’s creative work of the week is awarded to Year 8 for their drawings of creepy crawlies. Students have been working really hard on their tonal drawings producing some excellent results. These drawings are eventually going to inspire signs for Chester Zoo Insect House.

Well done Year 8.

Sports Leaders

Stanley High was once again the host of the Southport Primary Football league matches. Throughout the week, 25 teams took part and our Year 11 students refereed the matches excellently, ensuring they went ahead smoothly. Special mention must go to Joe Langford who organised the students and helped out every day.

This half term will see Stanley play Sefton Cup fixtures against Merchant Taylors High, Litherland High and Holy Family High. Our Year 8’s will also be looking to progress in the National Cup against Maghull High. Details of some Futsal and 7-a-side competitions will follow with dates to be confirmed with some of our local high schools. These games will be played on the 3G and in the Sportshall this half term. We will also see our Girls Football Teams enter into another LFCA tournament at Netherton Goals. During the last year, they have won and have had 2-second places, which means they have earned £175 in prize money, which will go to buying the girls a new kit. Well done to all the girls who have participated and have represented the school.

Our Year 11 Netballers attended a central venue tournament at Greenbank High involving Range High, Meols Cop High and Greenbank High. They played fantastically well in bitterly cold conditions and I am sure they will maintain their fitness levels for up and coming GCSE moderations.

Since half term we have started with Basketball through the extra-curricular programme. Students in KS3 have responded particularly well and already look like a promising team for the up and coming basketball season. Year 7’s have their first tournament next week which will be followed by a tournament for each year group leading up to Christmas.

Cross Country

We will again be taking part in the Sefton cross-country races that are being held at Birkdale Common, Merchant Taylors School and Stanley High School. The first race will be taking part at Birkdale Common on the 14th November and if any student is interested in representing the school please guide them to see Mr Walsh in PE for further details. Last year we had team success in Year 7 and 8 and 9 combined with individual winners in the both boys and girls competitions.

This half term will see competitions for both boys and girls in KS3 and KS4. All competitions will be held at Stanley High and involve High Schools in North Sefton. The winners of each competition will progress to a Merseyside Final so I am sure the boys and girls involved will be striving to reach the finals.

GCSE Moderation

Next week will see our Year 11’s take part in a Handball moderation with Meols Cop High, Birkdale High and Christ the King High. Due to the large amount of students who are choosing this sport as one of their practical activities, we will be hosting the boys on the 5th November and the girls one will be the following week. In the previous year Handball has been a ‘new’ sport identified by the school and through the School Games Organiser, Mike Smethurst, the programme has been recognised nationally. The Youth Sport Trust was recently at Stanley High School filming students involved in a Handball CPD course, which will be shared across the country and the National summit on 20th November.

Upcoming fixtures

  • Monday 5th November – GCSE Handball moderation
  • Tuesday 6th November – Year 7 Basketball competition at Birkdale High
  • Wednesday 7th November – Year 10 Football vs Birkdale High
  • Thursday 8th November – Indoor cricket with Greg Pennington from Lancashire County Cricket

In Spanish, Year 7 students have been finding out about the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos. Students have spent a lot of time researching interesting facts, drawing intricate patterns, creating skull masks and even baking traditional foods. A fabulous effort by all

We have a target of 95% attendance and work hard every day to beat this. The whole school attendance for week ending 18th October 2018 was 94.7%.
