Headteacher’s update

I am delighted to report that we made a fantastic £567.67 for Children in Need on Friday. It is always great to collect money for charity and I am pleased to say that the students (and parents!) yet again did not disappoint.

Year 8 merits

Jasmin Stevens has become the first Year 8 student to achieve her bronze badge. This was closely followed by Bellis Shukla; well done to both of these students.

Rotary Young Chef Competiton

Two of our GCSE food and nutrition students went to the Rotary competition at Southport College last Friday. They were required to prepare and cook a two course meal showcasing their skills.

Olivia and Rebecca did the school proud and Miss Smithies and Mrs Bowers were exceptionally pleased that they worked so hard to prepare themselves so well for the competition.

Year 11 Mock Exams

Year 11 students commence two weeks of Mock Exams on Monday, the exam timetable is available on the school website. If students have any question regarding the upcoming exams, please advise them to speak to the subject teacher or Mrs Rae.

Christmas Fayre

As we did last year, we will be holding a Christmas Fayre on Wednesday 12th December from 2pm to 6pm. There will be various stalls and a variety of entertainment slots and Year 9 students will be raising money for charity through the enterprise project as they did last year.

We would be delighted if you could send any items into school for the tombola stall as this was a big fundraiser last year, and we would love to match or beat the total that was raised. Students in Year 9 will choose their individual charities that will benefit from the enrichment programme and all other funds raised will be put back into the school.

Word of the week

As you may know, we have a word of the week that we are encouraging students to use and this is being displayed in classrooms and around school. The word for this week was ‘facetious’ and we hope that students had plenty of opportunities to use this. The word for week commencing 26th November will be ‘provoke’.

Maths and English Challenge

Their were no winners of the English Challenge from the last fortnight and the winner of the Maths Challenge was Evie (Year 7). Well done Evie.

The next challenge can be found on the link below, students have until Thursday lunch time to enter. Answers for all the challenges can also be found at the link. https://stanleyhigh.co.uk/fortnightly-challenges/

Art

Banks Primary School visited the Art Department this week to experience a High School environment. The visit was inspired by Ava in Year 11 when she led an Art activity on her work experience last year. The visit was also led by Year 10 Art leaders.

PE

GCSE moderation

Since the start of the year our Year 11 students have covered a number of activities including; Netball, football, rugby, basketball and handball in preparation for their GCSE practical mock exam on the 3rd December. Next week Stanley will host Birkdale, Christ the King and Meols Cop in our final moderation, which will cover badminton.

Badminton

Stanley hosted the North Sefton Girls KS4 Badminton competition on Wednesday. With an excellent turnout of eight teams Stanley were in a group with Christ the King and Greenbank. All the girls performed excellently throughout the competition winning three out of their four games, losing to eventual finalists Christ the King. Well done to the four girls involved.

National Award

It is pleasing to announce that our School Games Organiser, Mr Smethurst, won a National Award at the School Games Summit at the Richo Arena, Coventry on Tuesday. The National award was for the Innovative programmes that Mr Smethurst has put in place throughout North Sefton, which has engaged more students taking part in PE and School Sport. Thanks must also go to all the schools in North Sefton that have been a part of the programme.

Basketball

The Year 7 team have had a brilliant season so far; during this half term, they have won the recent Year 7 schools competition at Birkdale, winning all of their four games and this week at the Sefton Championships, they finished runners up by winning their seven group games and narrowly losing in the final by 1 point. Highlights of this weeks Sefton championships include victories of 22-0, 24-0 and 18-0 against Range, Maricourt and Meols Cop. Well done to all the students who have taken part and the school is very proud of the season you have had so far.

Year 7 and 8 Girls Football

At the recent girls football tournament at Netherton, Stanley entered two teams in the 7-a-side competition. Both teams won two games, losing one and drawing one, which meant they were both third in their groups. The girls have been fantastic throughout the season regularly finishing in the top 2, winning prize money from the Liverpool County FA. This competition the girls were able to play in the new kits the school has purchased with the prize money. Well done to all the girls who have been involved in the tournaments, there will be another one on the 13th December.

Technology

Catering

A group of students attended Runshaw College yesterday where they were taught by the chefs
and hospitality staff as well as the level 3 students at the college. They were lucky enough to
be able to involved in making millionaire shortbread and sausage rolls, creating non-alcoholic cocktails and cocktail theory, learning how to create elaborate garnishes, watching a demonstration of a flambé (crepes suzette), planning an event and they also watched a demonstration on how to fillet and portion a chicken, mackerel and sole fish.

The students were impeccably behaved and were a credit to the school and themselves and really enjoyed the experience, which highlights how important these trips are – a fantastic day all round.

Attendance

We have a target of 95% attendance and work hard every day to beat this. The whole school attendance for week ending 16th November 2018 was 96.2%.
