Headteacher’s update
Open Morning/Afternoons
We have had a number of tours this week, which have been very well attended by potential parents/carers. It is a delight to walk prospective parents around school to show them the wonderful school environment and calm atmosphere and to enable them to see the students and staff at work.
We have more dates available for tours over the next two weeks, as below.
- Tuesday 25th September – 1.15pm
- Wednesday 3rd October – 9.15am
- Thursday 4th October – 1.15pm
To make an appointment for a tour, please telephone the school office on 01704 228940 or email enquiries@stanleyhigh.co.uk.
Bikeability
Year 7 start their bikeability training on Monday 24th September at 8.45am. Please ensure that your child has the correct clothing, along with their bike and helmet for their allocated time slot. Over the next two weeks 63 students will take part in this annual training event.
Safety is paramount for us as students ride to school and as they approach the school entrance. It is fabulous to see so many students engaging in this opportunity.
Enrichment Days
Next Wednesday sees the first of our Enrichment days for students, where they will be off their normal timetable for the day to take part in additional curriculum subjects that will include wellbeing, road safety and College and Careers advice for Year 11 students.
Year 7 Parents Meeting
A Year 7 parents meeting will take place on Thursday 27th September starting at 6pm, with a short address by Mrs Urquhart and myself. There will be a chance to meet with form tutors and to take a guided tour around the school directed by your child. The new school Library will also be open and it is a great opportunity for you to visit this amazing resource.
At 6.45pm there will be a second meeting in the hall for all those going to Colomendy where key information will be given to parents/carers and there will be an opportunity to ask questions. We look forward to seeing you.

Macmillan Coffee Morning
We will be holding our annual Macmillan coffee morning on Friday 28th September and we hope that the fantastic efforts that both students and staff gave last year will be even better this year in our bid to raise money for what is a very worthwhile cause.
We invite parent/carers and grandparents to join us for refreshments from 10am to 12 noon and we welcome all donations of cakes, both homemade or shop bought, we will be providing refreshments for you to purchase to raise funds for this fantastic charity. We look forward to seeing you there.
Library/ Homework Club
The library is open every lunchtime and after school from 3-4pm for students wishing to complete any homework or to simply have a quiet area to read – there are hundreds of books to choose from! A member of staff is always at hand to assist the students. Additionally, there are numerous resources available, including laptops/tablets to aid their learning.
Art
Mrs Ward’s creative work of the week is awarded to Katie Jones in Year 11 for her outstanding summer holiday homework. The project brief was to create a three dimensional piece related to the theme colours in nature. Katie has made some highly detailed koi carp from clay and they are presented to look as if they are swimming in a tank. Well done Katie.
PE
Sports Leaders
Once again our sports leaders were at the forefront of welcoming Larkfield and Linaker year 6 classes to Stanley High. The primary pupils took part in a number of subjects including Science, PE, Geography and English. The feedback from teachers and pupils was excellent and special mention was to the students who helped during the day, their professionalism throughout the day was fantastic and they were a credit to the school.
Extra-curricular
This half term has seen huge numbers at lunch and after school, especially for Year 7 football, netball and dance. There are some netball fixtures against Scarisbrick Hall in the next couple of weeks and the football calendar begins, starting next week.
A big thank you to our Year 11 students who have been assisting the PE department with the extra-curricular; as always they have acted as fantastic role models to our younger students.
Year 7 Football
Our Year 7s played their first fixture this week against Scarisbrick Hall in extremely poor weather conditions. The students performed admirably and the signs for the up and coming season looks bright.
Football tour to Holland
Last week ‘Inspire Sports’ delivered a presentation to parent/carers for our proposed Year 7/8 football tour to Holland in April 2019. A final reminder that initial deposits are to be paid to the finance office by the 1st October.
