Headteacher’s update

Christmas Showcase

Over 40 students performed in our Christmas Showcase on Tuesday in front of invited parents and guests. It was a fantastic afternoon with singers, musicians, actors and dancers. Well done to all of the students involved

It was a wonderfully festive occasion and it was great to see so many parent/carers and visitors to the school and to enjoy a mince pie and hot drink with them.

Can I please extol my huge thanks to all the parents, carers, students, staff and governors who have shown their support to the school over the last term but in particular the last few weeks. We have endlessly requested support towards the various events taking place in order to raise funds for charity and you have continued to support us by donating items. Your support is always appreciated and it is fantastic that we are able to support numerous charities throughout the year. I am delighted to report that we have raised £1550.57 since September 2018.

Please remember that school will be closed from Friday 21st December at 12.15pm through to Wednesday 2nd January when the office will be open from 9am to 4pm. Students start back to school at 8.40am on Monday 7th January 2019.

I would like to wish you and your families all a peaceful and festive Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Art

Mrs Ward’s creative work of the week goes to Year 11 students for their amazing coursework.

Students have been working hard for months developing ideas and researching artists to give them ideas for their final pieces. The theme was confectionery and the pieces range from detailed tonal sweets in jars, cupcakes to ice creams and sundaes. A big thank-you to Mr Pinder our very talented technician for all the help he has given to the students with their framing and display pieces.

Drama

On Thursday 13th December we had Runshaw College’s Professional Performance Programme students perform their tour of ‘Hamlet Reloaded’ to over 70 GCSE Drama and Dance students.
The performance was fantastic and a real inspiration to our students watching how they can work as a team to create modern entertainment from classic Shakespeare. We look forward to the next production!

Languages

Eleven Year 10 students took the opportunity to visit a tapas restaurant in Liverpool to further their cultural understanding and to develop their Spanish speaking and listening skills. The students enjoyed a variety of tasty authentic dishes and managed to converse with the Spanish-speaking staff. Comments were made by other diners as to how wonderful our students are; Miss Peacock said that it was an absolute pleasure to accompany them and a great time was had by all. Fantástico!

Maths STEM

On Thursday we had a group of STEM co-ordinators from the British Army in school. A group of Year 8 students participated in a series of activities delivered by the Army that included: designing rocket
propelled cars and investigating the aerodynamic factors that affected the speed and movement of the car through the air.

Students learnt the series of failures engineers encountered when attempting the land speed record by the Thrust SSC car in 1997. However, upon those many failures, valuable lessons were learnt and the team were able to eventually set the land speed record. The amazing speed of 763 mph was finally reached by Thrust SSC in October 1997 and the rest is history.

Our engineers of the future, here at Stanley High School, designed cars that reached speeds of just under 50mph, a fantastic achievement, well done Year 8.

Thank you to the British Army for an excellent day. The students were totally inspired, engaged and thoroughly enjoyed the whole day.

Attendance

We have a target of 95% attendance and work hard every day to beat this. The whole school attendance for week ending 14th December 2018 was 95.8%.

Attendance
Congratulations to 7EC for achieving 100% attendance.
